Lent

Dear Churchfamily,

We are entering the season of Lent. The word Lent comes from the word lencten, which means spring. Historically, this season has been a time of preparation for the coming of Easter and remembering the passion of Jesus. Lent has also been the season of "giving up" things in our lives as an act of spiritual discipline. Each year I hear about people giving up chocolate for Lent, or giving up sodas, or deep fried foods. The idea of these acts being to deprive us of some of the indulgences in our lives as a way of focusing our attention towards God. In fact the early tradition stemmed from a time of fasting and preparation for baptism that new converts to the early faith practiced.

In recent years, I've also heard of people "taking up" some practice for Lent, rather than depriving themselves of something. Examples such as adding an extra time of prayer during the day, committing to a Bible study or class for lent, or simply taking a time of devotion each day to sit and be with God. I was struck by this idea when I read about an article that Erma Bombeck once wrote entitled If I Had My Life to Live Over Again. She writes,

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded. I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains. I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime. When my child kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now get washed up for dinner." There would have been more I love yous, more I'm sorrys, but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute, look at it and really see it, live it, and never give it back.

Those are powerful reminders of what's important in life. In Luke 12:25-27, Jesus reminds us,

And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

During this season of Lent, I want to encourage you to take time from your busy lives, hectic schedules, and worries about "clean carpets" to take time to experience God's presence around you. Take up the discipline of sharing a family meal together at least once a week (without TV). Take up the discipline of sharing a cup of coffee with a friend each week. Take up the discipline of reading a passage of scripture together with your spouse. Whatever you choose, let it be an expression of your thanks to God for the wonder of creation and the gift of grace.

With God's Peace,

Karl

A FIRESIDE CHAT

To Discuss Cornerstone UMC's
Possible Relocation

Sunday February 10, 2002
following Worship

As you know, our brothers and sisters in Cornerstone UMC are looking into the possibility of purchasing their own facility and moving to a new location in order to expand their ministry. As we celebrate the fact that their ministry is growing, it also raises many questions for us here at Orangethorpe UMC and our own future.

On Sunday, February 10th immediately following our worship service, we will adjourn to the Fellowship Hall for an old fashioned "fireside chat" sponsored by the Church Council. Our hope is to bring you up to date on all of the information about the possible move. We also want to give you the chance to ask any questions you may have, so we can all be working from the same page. Please plan to attend this gathering after worship, sip a cup of coffee, and be in dialogue with one another.

BITS AND PIECES

THANK YOU

"To all our friends at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church, we thank you for all the cards and remembrances at Christmas. They were greatly appreciated and we were overwhelmed. So 'thank you' one and all for your thoughtfulness.

A JOURNEY

As We Embark on this Journey Together

Many of you heard my testimony on Mother's Day about the journey I wished to pursue.

I would like to tell you what has happened over the last few months. I have been in retreat in August for several days of contemplation and renewal. In October, along with Kathy Ramsey, I became trained as a Local Lay Speaker for this church, preached on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and will preach again on February 17th. I have attended other specialized classes at the district and conference level.

Several weeks ago, I attended an International Clergywomen's Consultation/Sabbath in San Diego with over 1300 United Methodist Women who were Pastors, District Superintendents and Bishops from all over the world. I have had the privilege of working with seven pastors here at OUMC.

I have been a member of this church since 1962; and also a combination of your Church Secretary/Pastor's Assistant/Office Manager/Facilities Coordinator, depending on the Pastor and the situation, since January 1979.

After previous, deep consultation with Anita Iceman, and now Karl Stuckenberg and our Staff Parish Relations Team, I submitted my request to our Staff Parish in September, and then in October, to the District Superintendent to be considered for the Course of Study for Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church under the Board of Ordained Ministry.

I was accepted and have been appointed a Mentor Pastor, Rev. George Crisp, Christ by the Sea UMC in Newport Beach. We have had one meeting and will meet again in early February.

Many of you have known me for years, and some of you only a short time. You may know of my commitment to this church and to God. It has been a long path and I finally submitted to what I probably knew as a teenager. I am seeking to find God's will in my life, and know that I want to take my commitment to a much higher level and share the gift of Jesus Christ and his love with others. God has given me abundant gifts. This process affords me to seek where my gifts can be used to that realization. There will be meetings with my mentoring pastor, psychological testing, and abundant interviews with the boards that govern this process. Along the way and hopefully very soon, there will be training for 4 weeks each summer for 5 years at Claremont School of Theology. (There goes my vacation time). I questioned my decision last year knowing that I will soon be 58 years old and that this process will take at least 5 years. Many times in the past several months I have heard - the course takes five years and then you will be 63, - in five years you will still be 63 even if you don't follow this journey, so why not GO for it!

At our Charge Conference on January 24, my request to be accepted as a candidate for Licensed Local Pastor was approved.

Finally I would like to thank all of you who have given me your love and support in this endeavor. Your excitement and kinds words are immeasurable. I also thank a special angel for a generous donation to the church made in my name to help me with my journey. God Bless You.

May we come to know God's blessings and God's will for our lives as we begin our Lenten journey together. Search your heart for the spiritual gifts that God has generously bestowed on you and use them wisely. You are all very special to me.

Deepest appreciation,

Sharyl Lewis

PS - consider taking the Local Lay Speakers Class coming up in a few months. If I can do it, anyone can do it. It will enrich your life and help you in ministry for your church.

ANGEL TREE UPDATE

Perry and Sheri stuffed decorator bags by Linda, with crayons, chocolate, mini notebooks, colored pens, pencils and erasers, and candy canes. (This was made possible by all the generous cash donations we received) While Jo and Joseph played Santa and filled large bags of wrapped gifts waiting to be picked up by the children's guardians. (This was made possible by the members who adopted an angel and went shopping for them).

Patricia, a grandmother and the guardian for 'Precious', age 3, said: "Angel Tree is a big blessing for Precious, whose father is in prison." Precious said: "My daddy is giving me a present".

Angela, the mother of Josh, age 5, said: "I am very grateful for my son, Josh, that he able to receive gifts from his father through Angel Tree."

And all the people said: AMEN!
